Black 'forbidden' rice

Also known as forbidden rice, it's one of our super-food favourites, boasting some very impressive credentials.

This rice is so good that in ancient China only the emperor was allowed to enjoy it.

The grains are gluten free which means they're less likely to bloat you than their more refined relatives.

Black rice contains the entire bran where all the fibre and nutrients, including all the antioxidants, are kept. This fibre keeps you fuller for longer, aiding weight loss. It releases its energy slowly so it doesn't spike your blood sugar levels. It also binds with toxins in the bowl - this helps your body get rid of them while regulating your 'movements' :).

Black rice contains more protein, iron and anthocyanin (an antioxidant found in blueberries) than any other grain.

Tests have also shown that black rice decreases the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries, which is one of the key drivers for heart attacks and stroke (1). With benefits like these, black rice should always be on the menu.

This little beauty should definitely not be the black sheep of anyone's diet!
